CATV is short for "Community Antenna TV", but most people would call it "cable TV." Cable TV allows viewers to watch TV programs that they cannot receive through ordinary antennas. The TV signal does not travel along the curve of the earth's surface, but is emitted in a straight line. The signal went straight from the TV station towards the horizon and then went into space. If you live a few miles away from the TV station, you may not be able to receive images. Compared with the popularity of radio among previous-generation listeners, cable TV has not been popularized by all American households at the beginning because of the high monthly fees when it was put on the market.
